From this solo's program notes:

Feel the intensity pickup with the cross sticking pattern growing more persistent. Playfully called "chopping wood," I imagined a horde of gophers using an unorthodox technique for destroying a dam by catapulting wood the rival beavers had chopped and left piled up around their burrows. The building intensity represents the fear of the beavers discovering their plan, so the chopping sound becomes more insistent. Over the course of the solo, the same basic framework is used, but the details in each variation give it interest and work on specific musical skills.

New skills include:

Playing using the cross-stick technique. Recognizing "cresc." as an abbreviation of crescendo, spanning a larger distance.
